The president and CEO of Maryland Nonprofits, Heather Iliff, told the 11 News I-Team: "Neighborhood, smaller organizations and organizations run by people of color are finding fewer opportunities for funding. Nonprofits employ a lot of front-line workers. The pandemic isn't over, and those workers are putting their lives on the line every day."
Rick Cohen, chief operating officer of the National Council of Nonprofits, said fundraising numbers remain down for a number of organizations.
"COVID has been devastating for a lot of nonprofits," Cohen said. "Right now, we are still having demand for services going up and up and up, and resources to deliver those services going down and down and down. It's a bit of a struggle right now as we're being pulled in two opposite directions."
Cohen said the federal government's PPP funding helped nonprofits stay open, but now about 500,000 nonprofit jobs have not returned nationally, and there's little funding to bring employees back.
"In the nonprofit sector, when we don't have staff, it means we're not able to help as many people. A lot of those people don't have anywhere else to turn," Cohen said.
