National Council of Nonprofits Submits Statement to Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Before Its Hearing on “Child Care and Preschool: Cutting Costs for Working Families”

In advance of a public hearing today by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on “Child Care and Preschool: Cutting Costs for Working Families,” the National Council of Nonprofits submitted a letter to help Senators understand why child care is of critical importance to charitable nonprofits. Collectively, charitable nonprofits employ the third largest private workforce in the country. When at their jobs, nonprofit employees – just like employees of for-profit businesses and governments at all levels – need to know their children are safe and well cared for. The letter explains how lack of adequate child care is contributing to shortages in the nonprofit workforce, which then lacks capacity to deliver the same level of services to the public. The letter also identifies challenges faced by charitable organizations that are child care providers. Charitable nonprofits are on the frontlines as both significant employers and child care providers dealing with multi-pronged challenges of securing and providing safe, quality, and affordable child care. The National Council of Nonprofits letter shares some of the insights about challenges and the need for comprehensive rather than piece-meal solutions identified by nonprofits throughout the country.
