The nonprofit sector is facing the same pressures as for-profit businesses when it comes to workforce, which is said to be the single biggest challenge as the region transitions back from the emergency state of the pandemic.
The hardest-hit organizations are those that work with residential programs, such as mental health and developmental disabilities, and also those that work with child care, where the centers must meet a staffing requirement, said Doug Sauer, chief executive officer of New York Council of Nonprofits.

And even though the state has provided funding to raise compensation, it doesn't help if the workforce isn't there to be hired, Sauer said.
Places such as Vassar-Warner have raised the salaries of their staff and are offering sign-on bonuses, but it's still difficult finding people who have the qualifications and are vaccinated.
